A short summary of my project
My name is Lanre Sowami, I'm a 20 year old student studying Accounting and Finance at The University of Brighton. I'm crowdfunding to raise £4000 to buy a basketball wheelchair. The wheelchair is the only tool that enables me to play the sport I love. I'm also privileged to be on the Great Britain under 22s team who are currently under 22 World Champions! Having this specific basketball chair will enable me to excel fully to my best potential and compete at a higher level which I have be dreaming and working towards for years.
At the age of 4 I was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma which is a form of cancer in the lymphatic system. After a few years living in the hospital for chemotherapy treatment, I recovered, but lost the use of both of my legs. Growing up, my friends were mostly playing football and basketball. Obviously, I couldn't quite get the hang of football, despite my efforts in goal, so I joined the school basketball team. It was here that I was first advised to try out for wheelchair basketball, as I kept running over the players toes with my chair. Following this, I was a part of local teams, until I was eventually invited to a training camp to play for Great Britain whilst in an under 15's team in London.
Since then, I have been lucky enough to travel around the world with my teammates who have become like a family to me, whilst doing the one thing that I truly love. Basketball has been such an integral part of my life since such a young age, and this wheelchair would allow me to reach my full potential as a player!
